Economic Impact in the United States

  • The floral import industry makes up 80% of the flowers in the US market.

  • In 2023, the United States imported $2.3 billion in flowers

  • In 2023, 87% of imported flowers (by weight) came through South Florida ports.   Other most used port districts around the country are Los Angeles and New York.

  • In 2023, more than 91% of imported stems came through Miami International Airport.

  • The importing cut flower industry creates over 6,000 local jobs and about 200,000 jobs across the country that depend on the imported fresh cut flowers.

Guilt-free and impactful flowers beyond borders

  • Where do flowers come from? Colombia 58%, Ecuador 25%, Canada 4%, Netherlands 4%, Mexico 3%, others 5%.

  • 90% of the flowers imported by the U.S. are grown in developing countries. 

  • In Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Costa Rica alone an estimated 398,000 formal jobs are created by the flower industry, most of them are women heads of household in rural areas. 

  • A majority of imported flowers imported are grown under socially and environmentally responsible conditions.
