Government Shutdown: What It Means for Miami Inspections

As the U.S. government faces a potential shutdown, many in the floral industry are asking what impact this could have on inspections and port operations here in Miami.
The good news: the impact should be minimal for our sector.
Inspections Will Continue
Miami operates as a 24/7 inspection port, and inspectors are considered essential workers. This means that even during a shutdown, inspections will continue without interruption. The USDA identifiers responsible for verifying shipments will also remain on duty, ensuring that our supply chain continues to move.
What Could Change if the Shutdown Persists?
If the shutdown extends for a longer period, some adjustments may occur. Government workers may need to decide whether to work overtime or additional shifts, depending on operational demands and available resources. For now, however, the flow of inspections in Miami is expected to remain steady.
What This Means for AFIA Members
For importers and stakeholders in the floral industry, this is reassuring news: Miami’s critical role as a 24/7 inspection hub provides a level of stability, even during federal uncertainty.
AFIA will continue monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as needed.
